SNIADECKI MEETING IN VILNIUS

The 2nd Jędrzej Sniadecki’s Memorial Conference (JSMC-2023) “Frontiers in Molecular Life Sciences” was organized jointly by the Polish Biochemical Society and the Lithuanian Biochemical Society on 23–25 May 2023 at Vilnius University. The JSMC-2023 conference commemorates the 250th anniversary of Sniadecki’s birth following the 1st Belarusian-Lithuanian-Polish Jędrzej Sniadecki’s Memorial Conference organized in Grodno on 8–9 November 2018. The conference topics included: biomedicine, genetic diversity and systems biology, bioinformatics and biotechnologies. Approximately 100 scientists took part in the conference, including approximately 30 from Poland, including: from such centers as the Nencki Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Medical University of Białystok, the Jagiellonian University and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Opening lecture of the conference entitled „The history of chemistry in Lithuania” was presented by prof. Rimantas Vaitkus. 25 lectures were delivered and 50 posters were presented. On the first day of the conference, there was a ceremony of unveiling a plaque dedicated to Jędrzej Śniadecki. The plaque was placed on the building where Jędrzej Śniadecki gave lectures. Polish conference participants had the opportunity to visit the laboratories of the Life Science Center of Vilnius University, a leading scientific institution in Lithuania. Adam Szewczyk presented lecture on mitochondrial potassium channels. Antoni Wrzosek and Bogusz Kulawiak preseted posters.

At the end of the meeting, the possibilities of cooperation between the Polish Biochemical Society and the Lithuanian Biochemical Society were discussed. The authorities of both scientific societies unanimously confirmed their willingness to support scientific cooperation between biochemists from Lithuania and Poland. The next Śniadecki Conference will be organized in Poland in 2025. Additionally, activities will be undertaken to support cooperation, such as online scientific seminars for members of both societies, supporting study visits of scientists and the participation of members of the societies in national meetings. Additionally, a Map of Polish-Lithuanian Scientific Cooperation in the field of life sciences will be created. The societies will inform their members about international congresses organized in Poland and Lithuania.
